The soiree was well attended. Many of the wealthy blue bloods were yet to descend on the capital from their country estates, but they soon would. Sir Geoffrey said that in the next month she would notice a great difference in the city, more events being held, more people to meet and more opportunities to dazzle prospective suitors.
âMy sister tells me you were quite a hit at the picnic,â he said with satisfaction.
Sophy could have told him what else Mrs Harding said but she didnât. That conversation was between the two of them.
A quick glance at the guestsâ facesâsomething she was becoming adept atâshowed no sign of Harry or Lady Evelyn Rowe. She breathed a sigh of relief, and then saw a face that was familiar. Adam.
He was with an attractive young woman with dark hair who didnât appear to be overly thrilled to be by his side. Although when Adam spied Sophy, and came to join her, the womanâs eyes followed him and narrowed with something that looked like jealousy.
Adam knew it too. âIgnore her,â he muttered, when he reached Sophyâs side. âThatâs what Iâm doing. I am pretending she doesnât exist. That the whole situation is a nightmare and I will wake up soon. With any luck, with someone far more amenable.â
âWhat situation?â Sophy asked.
But Adam shook his head. âNever mind that. Letâs talk about you.â
âIâd rather not,â Sophy retorted.
Adam gave her his charming grin. Sheâd missed this side of him. And then he had to spoil it. âHarry thinks you are married, Sophy. Sir Geoffrey Bell? Is that his name?â
She glared at him. âIâm not.â
âYouâre a widow then?â
âAdam, I am not married and I am not a widow. I live in Lambeth with my grandmother. I have a sponsor, Sir Geoffrey Bell, who is old enough to be my grandfather and is definitely not my husband, and nor does he wish to marry me.â
He chuckled. âI am glad to hear it. I have been asking around about Sir Geoffrey, and I did hear he was rather elderly. Not the sort of husband I would have chosen for you.â
âWhat sort of husband would you have chosen for me?â she said before she could stop herself.
He arched an eyebrow. âI think we both know the answer to that one.â
Sophy looked away from his direct stare. He saw too much. âWhy did you think I was married?â she asked curiously. âMy father did want me to marry my cousin, but Harry knew I wasnât going to. I donât understand how this rumour started.â
âA question that needs serious investigating,â he said, as if he wasnât inclined to take it further.
Two pretty girls went past, casting Adam longing glances and giggling. Sophy noticed the brunette scowling.
âNow I know you are still single I can understand why Sir Geoffrey is sponsoring you,â he moved closer, his hazel eyes dancing wickedly. âHe has powerful and influential friends. Iâm sure he intends to make you a hit, Sophy.â
She snorted in an unladylike fashion, making him smile even more broadly, as if her lack of pretention pleased him.
